SU roundup: Kruger resigns as men's lacrosse coach

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

WINCHESTER -- Shenandoah University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Doug Zipp announced Tuesday that Mike Kruger has resigned as head men's lacrosse coach.

Kruger, who led the Hornets to five wins this year (matching the win total of the previous three seasons combined), is resigning to accept a professional opportunity in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse.

"This is great for Mike," Zipp stated in a school news release. "He has done a great job getting our program moving in the right direction and transitioning it to the ODAC. Now he has a chance to pursue a different challenge.

"We all are very happy for Mike and his wife Sarah that they have this opportunity."

Kruger, who came to Shenandoah after two years as an assistant at Washington and Lee, led the Hornets to two wins in his first season and five this past spring.

Included in that latter total were victories over Hood College and Marywood University, two teams that had beaten SU in 2012.

Kruger also brought a class of 24 student-athletes into his program this past year, more than doubling the size of the team.

The squad also improved its cumulative GPA and began an on-going series of community service projects.

"It is bittersweet that I am leaving Shenandoah," Kruger said. "I would like to thank Dr. Fitzsimmons, (former AD) Wayne Edwards, and Doug Zipp for the opportunity to lead the SU program for the past two seasons.

"I wish this program nothing but continued success in the future, and I know that SU will develop into one of the top programs in the ODAC. I am looking forward to my new challenge, and I am grateful for my experience at Shenandoah."

The university will conduct a national search for Kruger's replacement and expects to have a new person in place by the time classes begin at the end of August.
