Central garners sportsmanship award

Daily Staff Report – sports@nvdaily.com

Central High School is among 25 Virginia public high schools which have been awarded the 2012-2013 Claudia Dodson VHSL Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award.

The annual recognition by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) honors member schools that have “established policies and procedures that make sportsmanship a priority and an expectation within the school and the school community.” A total of 52 schools applied for the award, named in memory of former VHSL assistant director Claudia Dodson, who died in 2007.

The VHSL sportsmanship award is the second straight for Central, which first applied last year. To be selected, schools must score in the 90th percentile on a self-assessment checklist involving the administration, coaches, student-athletes, cheerleaders, performance groups, student support, parents and spectators. Points are deducted for coach and athlete ejections, and inappropriate behavior at state championship events.
