Front Royal wins pair in Legion action

FRONT ROYAL — The Front Royal Post 53 American Legion baseball team picked up a pair of victories on Sunday at Bing Crosby Stadium.
In the opener against the Stafford Post 290 Nationals, Front Royal notched a 6-3 victory behind Chaz Rutherford’s complete-game effort. The Skyline High School right-hander fired seven innings, allowing five hits and three runs while walking one and striking out two.
Post 53 got a strong effort at the plate from Skyline’s Hunter Stewart, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Heath Almarode and Hunter Partlowe added RBIs for Front Royal.
In the nightcap, Post 53 held on for a 6-5 victory over Ashburn Post 2001. Front Royal (8-4) jumped out to an early lead with a five-run rally in the bottom of the first inning, but Ashburn nearly tied it with four runs in the fourth. Post 2001 did tie the game with another run in the sixth, but Post 53 got the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Tyler Hott was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Post 53. Patrick McGrath and Stewart each added 2-for-4 efforts with an RBI, and Rutherford was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Neil Dutton and Robert Presley also drove in runs for Front Royal.
Hott, who relieved Dutton in the fourth, earned the win by pitching two scoreless innings.
