MIDLOTHIAN -- Former Skyline High School standout Ryan Rettberg missed the cut by one stroke at the State Open of Virginia on Friday, firing a second-round 79 to finish with a two-day total of 149.
Rettberg was tied for 12th in the tournament at Independence Golf Club after firing an open-round 70, but had trouble repeating that success on Friday. A rising senior who plays collegiately at Radford University, Rettberg opened play on the 10th hole with a birdie, but followed with a bogey and a double bogey on No. 11 and No. 12, respectively. He mostly shot even par from there until misfiring for a double bogey on the No. 3 hole, followed by a birdie, then another double bogey on the par-four No. 5 hole. Rettberg was still in line to make the cut until the final hole of the day, the par-three No. 9 hole, but had to settle for bogey and finished the tournament 7-over-par.
Rettberg's former Skyline teammate, James Madison student Zack Henry, rebounded from a tough opening round to shoot 74 on Friday for a two-day total of 156. Henry picked up four birdies on the day.
Defending champion Jay Woodson of Powhatan increased his opening-round lead with a solid second round. The PGA professional fired a 68 after opening with a 65 for a 9-under 133. Amateur Chris O'Neill was four shots back at 137.
