Rettberg tied for 12th after first round of State Open

MIDLOTHIAN — Former Skyline High School golf standout Ryan Rettberg fired a one-under-par 70 in the first round of the State Open of Virginia at the Independence Golf Club in Midlothian on Thursday.

Rettberg, who currently competes for Radford University’s golf team, tallied four birdies in the round and finished the first day tied for 12th, five strokes behind leaders Mike Gooden and Jay Woodson. Rettberg was at three-under-par until he bogeyed holes 16 and 17.

Zack Henry, also a former Skyline golfer, finished the first round with a nine-over-par 80, and had seven bogeys and one double-bogey in the round.

Rettberg is scheduled to tee off at 12:30 p.m. today on hole 10 for the beginning of round two, while Henry will tee off on the first hole at 12:39 p.m.
