River Bandits’ Henkel wins VBL’s weekly honor

Daily Staff Report – sports@nvdaily.com

Woodstock River Bandits starting pitcher Campbell Henkel was named the Valley Baseball League D-BAT Player of the Week on Monday.

Henkel is the seventh player to earn the honor this season as well as being the first from his ballclub. He joins the ranks of Covington’s Anthony Dimino, Waynesboro’s Patrick Mazeika, Front Royal’s Jordan DeLorenzo, Staunton’s James Vasquez and Charles Town’s Adam Parks and Matt Durst.

Henkel was 2-0 in his two starts in the previous week. On July 15 he tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing just two unearned runs in his win against the Winchester Royals. In that start he limited his opponents to just four hits and allowed only one walk. He struck out seven. In his second win of the week, the River Bandits traveled to Strasburg as Henkel went 8 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on just four hits. He walked one and struck out three in the start.

Henkel has shown consistency down the stretch for the River Bandits, who have clinched the North division and look to continue their run into the 2013 Valley League postseason. The junior left-hander from the Virginia Military Institute has posted a 5-0 record in eight games started this season. He has a 2.20 ERA and has struck out 41 batters in 49 innings pitched.

Among the honorable mentions for the award were New Market pitcher Justin Cooper, Front Royal pitcher Jordan DeLorenzo and Strasburg third baseman Cameron Smith.
