River Bandits put seven on VBL all-star team

The Valley Baseball League-leading Woodstock River Bandits have placed seven players on the upcoming VBL All-Star Game.

Woodstock, which entered Tuesday night's action with a league-best 17-5 record and currently leads the VBL's North Division, tied with South Division leader Harrisonburg with seven players named to the annual all-star game.

River Bandits catcher Andrew MacLatchie, who ranks among the VBL's leaders in home runs (three, tied for second) and RBIs (19, third in VBL) headlines a solid contingent from Woodstock. Joining him on the North Roster are second baseman Jerrod Groves, middle infielder Jonathan Popadics and outfielder Drew Cole. Woodstock also landed a pair of right-handed starting pitchers, Matt Hockenberry and Campbell Henkel, and righty reliever Ricky Winters on the all-star roster.

Woodstock's Phil Betterly will manage the North squad. Harrisonburg's Bob Wease will manage the South squad.

New Market had four pitchers named among its six selections to the South squad, including current VBL wins leader Justin Cooper. The left-hander is joined by fellow starters Andrew Woods and Aaron Cressley, plus current league-leading closer Adam Zipko (nine saves). Rebels shortstop Brandon Gum, currently second in the VBL in batting with a .420 average, and outfielder Landon Prentiss also made the South squad.

Strasburg landed five players on the North all-star roster, headlined by current VBL batting leader Jordan Tarsovich. The outfielder from VMI is entered Tuesday night's action with a .430 batting average. Power-hitting first baseman Erik Armstrong (four homers, second in VBL) and third baseman Tyler McDonald also made the team. Strasburg also garnered spots for right-handed relievers Daniel Bridgeman and Brandon Hallford.

Front Royal placed four players on the North roster, led by left-handed starting pitcher Jordan DeLorenzo. The West Florida product ranked second in the VBL in strikeouts (38) and is tied for third in wins with three. Joining him from the Cardinals are fellow left-handed starting pitcher Dalton Potts (0.92 ERA in 29 1/3 innings), shortstop Brandon Tierney and outfielder Brent Morris.

The VBL all-star game is scheduled for Sunday, July 7 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Harrisonburg.
