WINCHESTER — Shenandoah University football coach Scott Yoder announced a 40-man recruiting class for the Hornets on Tuesday.
This 40-man class joins with 57 returnees to make up the pre-season roster for Yoder’s first team.
Yoder was named as the third coach in program history in January.
The recruiting class, brought together by Yoder and his full-time assistants Brock McCullough, Stan Hodgin, Kalvin Oliver and Drake Woodard, features student-athletes from Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
This class could also increase by as many as four players as these prospective students are currently finalizing their paperwork to enter SU this fall.
Five players are transfers, including three from NCAA Division III national champion Mount Union and one from DI Old Dominion.
Yoder also grabbed one player from VHSL Group AA, Division 4 state champion Briar Woods and three players who are natives of the northern Shenandoah Valley.
Also among the newcomers are two area players — Randolph-Macon Academy’s Andre Lake and Central’s Jordan Umstead.
“The staff worked very hard to bring in this class,” Yoder stated in a news release. “We have a great group of returnees and I am looking forward to adding these newcomers into our program.
“Everybody is going to have the same opportunity to go out and earn playing time this fall.”
Shenandoah opens its 2013 season on Sept. 7 with a home non-league game against Gallaudet.
