WINCHESTER — Shenandoah University head cross country and track coach Andy Marrocco announced Wednesday that he has added a total of 24 student-athletes into his six programs for the 2013-14 academic year.
Included in this group are two men: Jonathan Gery and Matthew Gussiaas, and four women: Barbara Addo, Christine Bangura, Amanda Pettyjohn and Shelby Shrader, that plan on running cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter and outdoor track in the spring.
The group represents eight states including single student-athletes from California, Delaware, Illinois, New Jersey and New York.
The class is rounded out by 11 student-athletes from Virginia, six from Maryland and two from Pennsylvania.
The vast majority of the track athletes, 18, are sprinters and jumpers while four plan on concentrating on middle distance or distance events.
Sherando High School graduate Brooke Bowser, listed on the preseason roster as a sprinter/jumper, is among the girls track and field recruits.
Joshua Wax, from Chesapeake, is a thrower while Alyssa Skelly plans on competing in the multi events (pentathlon indoors, heptathlon outdoors).
“The sprinters and jumpers are going to greatly add to our depth in those events,” Marrocco stated in a news release. “I see the mid-distance and distance runners helping out an already strong group, which I think is also the case with the throwers and the combined event people.
“I look forward to working with all of these athletes.”
