SU roundup: Hornets add six to volleybal team

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

WINCHESTER -- Shenandoah University volleyball coach Jaime Terenzi announced Wednesday a group of six recruits that she is adding into her program for the 2013 season.

Terenzi will welcome two setters, two middle blockers, an outside hitter and a defensive specialist into the program to go along with 11 returnees from the 2012 squad.

Five of the six women are Virginia natives with the sixth, middle blocker/outside hitter Torey Kragness, hailing from Trenton, North Dakota.

Kragness, the team MVP the past two seasons, will be the first SU student-athlete from North Dakota.

All six earned All-District honors highlighted by McKenzie Fischer, a 5-foot, 6 inch defensive specialist from Gloucester High School who earned Peninsula District Player of the Year honors.

Two players, Danyelle McGrady and Rachel Roberts, helped their teams to VHSL state championship appearances.

Roberts, from Loudoun County, was part of a Raiders team that won their fifth Group AA state championship in the past six years. She will also be playing in the VHSL All-Star game this summer.

McGrady is a Luray native and led a Bulldogs team that advanced to the Group A championship match.

Warren County graduate Rachel Cerretani and Jasmine Callahan, from Forest, round out the class. Both women earned all-district honors, with Callahan also being named all-region.

"We have a good group coming in," Terenzi stated in a school news release. "We had a solid first year in the ODAC last fall and I expect that these players will help us achieve our team goals in 2013."

Shenandoah opens its 2013 season on Aug. 30 at the Gettysburg Tournament.
