SU roundup: Hornets pick up 13 for softball

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

WINCHESTER -- Shenandoah University softball coach Marlena Kotynski announced a group of 14 women she is adding into her program for the upcoming season.

Kotynski, who led the Hornets to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game appearance this past spring, has brought in a class that features 13 freshmen and one junior transfer.

That junior, Lisa Mitro, comes to SU after playing the past two seasons at former USA South foe Averett University. Mitro pitched in 32 games for the Cougars during her two years in Danville and was named USA South Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Week one time during her freshman season.

The 13 women hail from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia with Virginia, at nine players, leading this pack.

The West Virginia native, Nicole Pierson, helped Hurricane High School to a Class AAA state championship this spring while being named All-State and selected to the 21st Annual North-South All-Star game.

Pierson is one of three players in the class to earn All-State honors in their careers. Alyssa Dietz, from Mechanicsburg, and Karli Rorabaugh, from Mafaffey, both were named All-State in Pennsylvania.

Megan Rion, from Clarke County High School, is the lone local player in the class.

"We had another great season last spring," Kotynski, who surpassed 200 career victories with a win at Bridgewater on March 29, stated in a school news release.

"Advancing to the ODAC Tournament game made our women even more determined to have success. This group of student-athletes is going to help our team reach those goals."
