WAYNESBORO -- Homestanding Waynesboro erupted for six runs over the first two innings against New Market to even best-of-three Valley Baseball League South division championship series with a 12-3 victory on Friday night.
The Generals roughed up Rebels starting pitcher Connor Staskey with a four-run rally in the first inning, then tacked on two more in the bottom of the second after second-seeded New Market had gotten a pair of runs back on a Landon Prentiss two-run homer in the top of the inning.
New Market didn't do much else against Waynesboro starting pitcher Tyler Fox, who worked seven inning to pick up the win. Fox allowed just two hits and three walks while fanning seven Rebels.
Staskey, who took the loss, was gone after three innings. Rebels reliever Josh Wood didn't fare any better, also allowing six runs in his 3 1/3 innings of work.
New Market, which had only four hits, tacked on one last run when Ben Schmucker scored on Kevin Stypolkowski's double-play grounder with the bases loaded in the ninth.
Prentiss was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead New Market, which will host the Generals tonight in a winner-take-all Game 3 at Rebel Park. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
