JMU roundup: Two Dukes named preseason all-CAA in volleyball

RICHMOND — James Madison volleyball junior middle blocker Lizzy Briones and sophomore outside hitter Meghan Niski were named Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association Honorable Mention as announced by league on Monday.
Briones is the team’s top returning offensive player after average 3.31 points per set a year ago. She collected 269 kills on .267 hitting, adding 17 aces and a team-best 94 blocks. Briones averaged 2.61 kills and 0.91 blocks per set while adding 0.49 digs per set. The Siloam Springs, Ark., native appeared in 28 matches last season, starting 27 of them. She appeared in 103 sets.
Niski was voted to the CAA All-Rookie team in 2012 after averaging 2.32 kills and 2.54 digs per set. She started all 29 matches, collected 246 kills on .176 hitting, 269 digs, 15 assists, eight aces and 25 blocks. She was fourth on the team, and is the second-leading returner, with 267 points.
College of Charleston’s Darcy Dorton was voted the preseason Player of the Year. She was joined on the Preseason All-CAA team by her teammate Sloane White, Northeastern’s Kelly Bacon, William and Mary’s Dessi Koleva, UNCW’s Christi Laite, Delaware’s Ariel Shonk and Hofstra’s Kelsie Wills.
Joining Briones and Niski as honorable mentions were Melissa Morello of College of Charleston, Mackenzie Olsen of Delaware and Natalia Skiba of Northeastern.
