Prep roundup: Holmes leads Colonels to Northwestern mini win

Daily Staff Reports - sports@nvdaily.com

WINCHESTER -- James Wood's golf team proved too much to handle during Tuesday's Northwestern District mini tournament at Winchester Country Club, as the Colonels combined to fire a 323 to win by 13 strokes.

Sherando took second with a 336.

James Wood's Will Holmes claimed medalist honors by shooting an even-par 72.

Sherando's Brett Loy was just one shot back with a 73.

Also scoring for the Warriors were Mason Scott (82), Jonah Pearson (89) and Collin Ordonez (91).

Sherando and Skyline (no team score available) will be back in action Thursday in another Northwestern District mini at Rock Harbor Golf Course in Winchester.

Rams 337, Cougars 458

FRONT ROYAL -- Tyler Doman fired a four-over 76 to lead Strasburg to a 121-stroke victory over Bull Run District rival Manassas Park on Tuesday at Blue Ridge Shadows.

The Rams fired a combined 337 for the win.

Also scoring for Strasburg were Jacob Smith (82), Resse Taylor (89) and Colten Smith (90). Garrett Richards also carded a 90.

Strasburg returns to action on Thursday, hosting Warren County in another dual match at Blue Ridge Shadows.

Falcons 344, Wildcats 418

FRONT ROYAL -- Central golfer Jacob Allwine's eight-over 80 was good enough for low medalist honors in Tuesday's dual match with Warren County at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club.

Central topped the Wildcats, 344-418, for the win.

Joining Allwine with scoring finishes for the Falcons were Joseph Plauger (81), Ben Kline (87) and Corey Sibert (96).

For Warren County, Courtney L'Amoreaux fired a 93 to lead the squad. Other scorers for the Wildcats were Brandon McWhorter (102), Chase Hatfield (110) and Peyton Poe (113).

Central is back in action Thursday at William Monroe, while Warren County visits Strasburg at Blue Ridge Shadows.

Clarke County tri-match

FRONT ROYAL -- Defending Group A state champion William Monroe rolled to a convincing victory in Tuesday's tri-match at Blue Ridge Shadows.

The Green Dragons combined to shoot a 140 in the nine-hole (Par 36) match. Stonewall Jackson had a 164, and Clarke County tallied a 178.

"William Monroe is just so consistent in everything they do," Stonewall Jackson coach Roger Wilkins said, "their tees, their irons and especially their putting."

William Monroe's Logan Yates fired a three-under 33 to take low medalist honors.

The Generals got scoring efforts from Andrew Good (37), Jonathan Koontz (40), Kory Somers (40) and Ben Rosenberger (47). Eric Arnesen also fired a 47 for Stonewall.

The Generals will be back in action on Monday for the Shenandoah County tournament at Bryce Resort.
