Prep roundup: Doman leads Rams to runner-up effort
Daily Staff Reports - email@example.com
NEW MARKET -- Tyler Doman's 67 on a slightly shortened course headlined another solid day for Strasburg High School's golf team at Tuesday's Bull Run District mini tournament.
With the par 3, No. 17 hole ruled unplayable at Shenvalee Golf Resort, the normally par 71 course played as a par 68. Doman was still a stroke under that, and finished just one shot behind medalist Logan Yates (66) of William Monroe. The Green Dragons, the Group A defending state champions, combined for a strong 278 to win team honors. Strasburg notched a 301, and Central was third at 316. Warren County was last among the eight-team field with a combined 418.
"We feel like we played pretty well," Strasburg coach Ricky Bowley said. "I think Tyler played awfully well and he feels pretty good about that."
Doman's teammate Colten Smith tallied a 73, while Jacob Smith had a 77 and Garrett Richards carded an 84 to complete the Rams' scoring.
Ben Kline and Joseph Plaugher each finished at 75 to lead Central. Jacob Allwine added a 79 and Joey Canzurlo tallied an 87 to help the Falcons take third.
Warren County got scoring efforts from Courtney L'Amoreaux (99), Chase Hatfield (104), Brandon McWhorter (106) and Destin Waller (109).
All three teams will be back in action Thursday at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club for another district mini tournament.
Shenandoah District mini tournament
STAUNTON -- For the first time in four Shenandoah District mini tournaments, Stonewall Jackson did not come out as the team champion on Tuesday.
The Generals, winners of district minis this season at Gypsy Hill, Heritage and Shenvalee Resort, combined for a 322 to finish third behind winner Buffalo Gap (316) and runner-up Wilson Memorial (322).
"We just didn't really click today," Stonewall Jackson coach Roger Wilkins said. "My bottom three actually played real well, but we just all had trouble today with our irons."
Andrew Good led the Generals with a 76. Jonathan Koontz and Ben Rosenberger both carded 81s, and Colton Harlow rounded out the scoring with an 84. Eric Arnesen also shot an 84 for Stonewall.
The Generals are back in action for the season's fifth district mini on Thursday at The Caverns Country Club in Luray.
