STAUNTON -- Stonewall Jackson High School's golf team got its season off to a strong start by winning Wednesday's Shenandoah District mini-tournament at Gypsy Hill Golf Club.
The Generals fired a combined 326 to top their district rivals, with Stonewall's Jonathan Koontz tying for low medalist honors after shooting a 75 on the par-71 course.
Other scoring finishes for the Generals were Colton Harlow (82), Andrew Good (84), and Eric Arnesen and Ben Rosenberger both carding 85s. Kory Somers rounded out Stonewall's group with an 87.
"It was a great start," Generals coach Roger Wilkins said.
Buffalo Gap's Nate Hildebrand shared medalist honors with Koontz by shooting a 75.
Buffalo Gap took second in the team competition, three shots back at 329.
Stonewall Jackson is back in action Thursday for another district mini-tournament at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.
HARRISONBURG -- Sherando's youthful golf team opened its season on the road for Wednesday's Spotswood Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course.
The Warriors, who have no seniors, finished seventh with a combined 342. Host Spotswood won the 12-team tournament with a 310.
"I asked them today, I said, 'Let's finish in the middle of the pack,'" Sherando coach Rob Wright said. "We had some tough competition there. Spotswood finished second in the state last year and Western Albemarle is always around the top. We had five guys playing in their first tournament, and four had never seen the course before."
Freshman Brett Loy led the way for the Warriors with a 74 on the par-72 course, good for fifth overall. Wright said Loy would have finished even higher, if not for back-to-back bogies on the final two holes.
Collin Ordonez totaled an 88, and Jonah Pearson and Mason Scott each added 90s for the Warriors.
Sherando is back in action today in the Curly Licklider Tournament at Front Royal's Shenandoah Valley Golf Course. Warren County is hosting the tournament, which is slated to feature Strasburg and Skyline among a large field.
