SU roundup: Hornets picked 6th in women’s soccer poll

FOREST — The Shenandoah University women’s soccer team is the pre-season No. 6 selection of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference coaches in pre-season poll results released Wednesday by the league office.
The Hornets, who made an appearance in the ODAC semifinals last season thanks to a 3-2 overtime victory over Washington and Lee in the tournament quarterfinals, have 88 points in the poll to find themselves sandwiched between No. 5 Roanoke and No. 7 Randolph-Macon.
Defending champion Lynchburg, which downed SU in the tournament semis, is the pre-season pick to win it again in 2013.
Lynchburg has 10 first-place votes and 142 points.
Voting was done on a 12-1 basis and coaches could not vote for their own team in the poll.
Coach Liz Pike’s club opens its season on Friday evening at 8 p.m. in a non-league home game against Mary Washington. The ODAC opener is Sept. 14 versus Randolph.

Shenandoah, coming off of a three-win season that included a 3-0 victory over Randolph-Macon in the home finale, has 22 points in the poll to come in 11 points behind those same Yellow Jackets.
Roanoke is the pre-season favorite after garnering 119 points and 10 first-place votes.
Lynchburg trails the Maroons by 18 points and has one of the two remaining first-place votes to earn the No. 2 spot.
Voting is on a 11-1 basis and coaches cannot vote for their own schools in the poll.
SU opens its season on Friday with a 6 p.m. non-conference contest against Washington (Md.).
