JMU roundup: Dukes lose opener of JMU Invitational

HARRISONBURG — Junior middle blocker Lizzy Briones finished with nine kills and three blocks as the James Madison volleyball team fell to Wake Forest in the opening game of the JMU Invitational in Sinclair Gymnasium/Godwin Hall on Friday evening.

Wake Forest won the match 3-0 by set scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-19 to improve to 9-1 on the season. JMU dropped to 4-7 with the loss.

Briones hit .286 in the match with three errors to go with her nine kills on 21 attack attempts. She finished with one solo block, two block assists and one dig. Sophomore outside hitter Meghan Niski chipped in three kills, 13 digs, two assists, a block and a service ace to finish with 4.5 points. Redshirt junior middle blocker Kelly Maguire came off the bench to supply four kills on .429 hitting and three blocks.

Redshirt junior setter Kristi Richardson handed out 25 assists and added nine digs, two kills, two blocks and a service ace. Sophomore libero Jaclyn Placha made her first career start at libero, finishing with 10 digs.

The Demon Deacons were paced by outside hitter Matalee Reed who finished with14 kills on .438 hitting and four blocks. Middle blocker Kristin Grissom contributed 10 kills and a block while outside hitter Kylie Hargreaves supplied eight kills, a match-high 15 digs and three service aces. Setter Sophia Dodd had 36 assists while libero Megan Miller contributed nine digs.

James Madison returns to the court on Saturday for day two of the JMU Invitational. The Dukes face Campbell at 12:30 p.m. and Cleveland State at 7:30. Cleveland State downed Campbell 3-1 on Friday night.
