On Campus: Metheny off to strong start

Ross Metheny (Sherando '09) is having a stellar start to his senior season at the University of South Alabama.

Metheny has led the Jaguars to a 2-1 record, including back-to-back impressive wins in the Sun Belt Conference.

The quarterback has thrown for 595 yards on 42 for 62 passing with four touchdowns and only two interceptions this season. Metheny has also ran for 99 yards, which is third on the team, on 22 carries and has three rushing touchdowns.

On Saturday, Metheny led the Jaguars to a 31-24 win over Western Kentucky. The Jaguars scored the last 10 points of the game, including the winning touchdown with 1:38 left in the contest.

Metheny was 11 for 15 passing for 193 yards. He also had 22 yards rushing on eight carries, and had a rushing touchdown.

On the game-winning drive, Metheny had one of the key plays with a 12-yard run to set-up a first-and-goal at the Western Kentucky 2.

On Sept. 7, Metheny led the Jaguars to a 41-39 win over Tulane. Metheny accounted for 365 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, both school records.

He was 19 for 30 for 290 yards passing with two touchdowns in the win. Metheny also ran for a career-high 75 yards on 11 carries and was the Jaguars' leading rusher. He was also named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his play in the victory.

A COLONEL AGAIN: Andrew Lloyd (James Wood '09)is once again playing for the Colonels, but this time it's with Eastern Kentucky.

The former Shenandoah University kicker is having plenty of success as eastern Kentucky's starting placekicker. Lloyd has made two of his three field goal attempts, including a 37-yarder.

The redshirt junior has had five touchbacks in his 15 kickoffs so far this season. His kickoffs are averaging 59.2 yards.

The Colonels opened the season with a 38-6 win over Robert Morris on Aug. 29, and lloyd had five extra points and a field goal in the win. In a Sept. 7 44-7 loss to Louisville Lloyd made his only extra point attempt.

On Saturday in a 51-32 loss to Coastal Carolina, Lloyd made a 30-yard field goal and made all three of his extra point attempts.

SOLID START: Ryan Rettberg (Skyline '10) had a good showing in his first golf tournament of the season for Radford University.

The Highlanders finished seventh out of 13 teams in the SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate golf tournament held at Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. on Sept. 9-13.
Rettberg figured in the scoring for the Highlanders two of the three days and had a three-day total of 223, which was seven shots over par.

Rettberg shot a 74, a 76 and then a 73 in his final round. The senior finished tied for 47th in the event.

The course was a par 72. As a team, the Highlanders shot a 286 on the first day, followed by a 292 and then a 291. Radford's 869 total was five shots over par.

The Highlanders will be back in action on Sept. 23-24 in the Golf Galaxy VCU Shootout, held at Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot.
