Sherando graduate and University of South Alabama quarterback Ross Metheny was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Metheny accounted for 365 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, both school records, to lead the Jaguars past Tulane, 41-39, on Saturday.
The senior was 19 for 30 for 290 yards passing with two touchdowns. He also ran for a career-high 75 yards on 11 carries and was the Jaguars' leading rusher.
He helped give the Jaguars a 21-7 lead in the opening quarter, which was the most points scored in a quarter in two years.
On the opening possession of the contest, Metheny gave the Jags a 7-0 lead on the fourth play from scrimmage when he scored on a career-long 35-yard run. He then found Shavarez Smith for a 14-yard touchdown, and hit Davin Hawkins on a 30-yard scoring play as the Jaguars built a 21-7 lead in the first period. Metheny again reached the end zone one minute into the second quarter from 12 yards out to extend the South Alabama advantage to 28-7.
Entering Saturday's SBC game against Western Kentucky -- which will kick off at 6:30 p.m. at Ladd-Peebles Stadium -- Metheny stands in the top five in the league in passing efficiency (third, 157.38 rating), total offense (third, 239.50 ypg) and passing yards per contest (fifth, 201 ypg).
