SU roundup: Hornets blank Hollins in women's soccer

Daily Staff Reports - sports@nvdaily.com

WINCHESTER -- The Shenandoah University women's soccer team earned its second straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory of the season with a 7-0 shutout of visiting Hollins Wednesday night.

The Hornets (4-4, 2-0 ODAC) dominated Hollins (1-4, 0-2) throughout the match.

Shenandoah outshot its visitors 36-2 over the 90 minutes and took all seven of the game's corner kicks.

Shenandoah coach Liz Pike saw her squad produce all of the offense it would need in the 11th minute when Anna Wilson finished off a Danielle Burris feed for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Hornets added goals in the 18th, 21st, 22nd and 24th minutes to take a 5-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, sophomore Kati Richardson had both of the victor's goals, scoring at 52:49 and 58:21.

Burris had a team-high five points on two goals and one assist, with Wilson and Kelsie Luddington both chipping in a goal and an assist.

Richardson, with two goals, and Leanne Mayo (two assists) rounded out the multiple point scorers.

Hollins goalkeeper Megan McKee made 16 saves.

Shenandoah is back in action on Saturday at Emory & Henry in another ODAC contest.

Volleyball

WINCHESTER -- The Shenandoah volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak Wednesday evening with a 3-0 non-league sweep of Gettysburg.

Shenandoah (6-6) won at 20, 23 and 22 over the Bullets (7-6).

Gettysburg appeared to be prepared to extend the match to a fourth set as it led by as much a five points and was up four, 17-13, midway through the set.

The Hornets had an answer, however, scoring four straight points with Rachel Cerretani at the service line to tie it at 17-17.

The two teams stayed within two points of each other until Shenandoah finally closed it out by scoring the final three points of the match.

Jasmine Callahan had the match-clinching point with a service ace.

Sophomore Blake Parkes paced the victors with a match-high 10 kills, with Rachel Gross adding eight and Haley Smith seven.

Sarah Gorski had eight kills and Laura Bergin seven for the Bullets.

Hannah Bentz paced the Gettysburg defense with 14 digs, while Gross had 12 and Taylor Anderson 10 for SU.

The Hornets continue non-league play this weekend with a tri-match at Stevenson.
