SU roundup: Hornets fall to Hood College in men's soccer

Daily Staff Reports - sports@nvdaily.com

WINCHESTER - Visiting Hood College kept the Shenandoah University men's soccer team winless on the season with a 2-1 non-league victory Tuesday evening.

Hood (2-3) broke a tie game with a Drew Demich unassisted goal in the 59th minute to give the Blazers the one-goal victory over SU (0-7).

Shenandoah had brought the game back to level on an Eduardo Santiago tally at 29:07.

Freshman Tommy Scott fed Santiago the ball to start the scoring rush and Santiago knocked his shot from 10-yards out to make it 1-1.

HC had taken its initial lead in the 21st minute before Santiago answered in the 30th minute.

SU was held without a shot after the Blazers took the 2-1 advantage.

Hood outshot its hosts 15-5 and had an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Rodrigo Casteriana made seven saves in the losing effort and Jake Heeren had a defensive save.

Shenandoah completes its non-conference slate on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Cairn.

Field hockey
YORK, Pa. - Host York College of Pennsylvania rallied for a 4-3 non-conference field hockey victory over Shenandoah Tuesday afternoon.

Shenandoah (3-4) led 2-0 early in the second half thanks to a pair of Ashley Cross goals, but could only watch as the Spartans (2-3) stormed back into the contest.

YCP, trailing 2-0 after Cross scored her second of the game at 37:24, tallied at 39:18 and 41:26 to tie matters at 2-2.

Sophomore Kelani Bailey gave the Hornets the lead back with an unassisted goal at 43:04 only to see the Spartans rally for a second time.

Kailey Brewer tied it again for the hosts at 52:47 before Katie Petrillo scored the eventual game-winner off of a penalty corner at 56:18.

Shenandoah would have one more excellent chance, on a penalty corner in the final minute, but YCP was able to come up with a defensive save to preserve the victory.

York outshot SU 24-6 with Hornets goalkeeper Sarah Clare making six saves.

Shenandoah is off until hosting Washington & Jefferson on Sunday in another non-conference contest. Game time is 2 p.m.
