SU roundup: Hornets drop five-set match at home

WINCHESTER -- The Shenandoah University volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker in its home opener Wednesday evening, losing 3-2 to Penn St. - Altoona.
Shenandoah (3-2) took a 1-0 lead with a 34-32 win in the opening set before PSU-A (2-3) answered back with wins at 21 and 23 in the second and third.
Coach Jaime Terenzi's team then forced a fifth and deciding set with a 27-25 victory in the fourth.
Unfortunately for Shenandoah, PSU-A controlled the fifth throughout, winning 15-11 to clinch the victory.
Junior Samantha Schambach pace five SU women in double-figure kills with 13 while Haley Smith added 12, Rachel Roberts 11 and both Blake Parkes and Rachel Gross 10 each.
Jasmine Callahan had a match-high 55 assists with Schambach and Taylor Anderson both posting 16 digs.
The Hornets take on Hood and Lancaster Bible on Saturday as part of a quad match. Play begins at 9 a.m. and runs through a 5 p.m. contest against Lancaster Bible.
Catholic 5, Shenandoah 2
WINCHESTER -- Visiting Catholic University used a three-goal spurt midway through the second half Wednesday night to fuel a 5-2 non-league men's soccer victory over host Shenandoah.
After Emilio Altamirano tied the game for SU (0-3) with his unassisted goal at 52:14, Catholic (2-1) answered with three goals in a span of 5:22 to re-take the advantage.
Nico Bartolomeo scored the first two goals, at 70:02 and 71:50, before setting up Kevin Romano at 75:24 with what proved to be the final goal of the game.
Sophomore Eduardo Santiago had gotten Shenandoah on the board by finishing off an Andrew Ralli feed at 26:13 to cut the Hornets deficit to one at 2-1.
Catholic had taken the 2-0 lead with goals in the seventh and 24th minutes.
CUA outshot its hosts 28-4 and had a 9-3 advantage in corners.
Shenandoah goalkeeper Rodrigo Casteriana made 11 saves to keep his side in the contest.
The Hornets take to the road this weekend to play in the St. Mary's (Md.) Tournament. SU plays Salisbury and the host Seahawks.
Gettysburg 7, Shenandoah 0
GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Shenandoah women's soccer team saw its two-game season-opening winning streak end Wednesday with a 7-0 non-league loss at Gettysburg College.
The Bullets (2-0-1) scored their initial goal in the 33rd minute before tallying three times in a 12-minute span of the second half to pull away from SU (2-1).
Hannah Theurer scored what proved to be the game-winner by one-timing a Molly Phillips cross at 32:50.
Gettysburg then scored in the 54th, 58th, 66th, 75th, 78th and 90th minutes to provide the final margin of victory.
Freshman Erin Septer, who played the initial 65:36 in goal, made three saves.
Gettysburg outshot the Hornets, 17-6, while the two teams split six corner kicks.
Shenandoah continues this road trip this weekend by participating in the Capital University (Ohio) Tournament. SU plays Denison (Ohio) in addition to the host Crusaders.
