SU roundup: Hornets' rally falls short in double OT
Daily Staff Report - email@example.com
FROSTBURG, Md. - Host Frostburg State ended a furious Shenandoah comeback with a 4-3 double overtime victory in non-conference field hockey action Thursday evening.
Frostburg (2-2) got an Alisha Salomon penalty stroke goal in the 91st minute to give the Bobcats the win over Shenandoah (3-2).
Salomon played the hero at both ends of the field - just 2:14 prior to her game-winner, she made a defensive save of a Sarah Brock shot to extend the contest.
Salomon's goal also ruined a two-goal comeback by the Hornets.
Trailing 3-1 in the 40th minute when Alexandra Darrow scored for the hosts, Shenandoah stormed back in the final 10:03 of regulation with Kelani Bailey and Ashley Cross tallies.
For Cross, the tying goal brought redemption as she was denied by Frostburg State goalkeeper Megan Grimm on a penalty stroke in the 59th minute.
Brock had the first goal for the victors off of a Bailey assist in the ninth minute.
Frostburg had taken a 2-0 lead with two goals in the opening 2:41.
FSU held a 22-20 advantage in shots while the Hornets took 16 of the game's 26 penalty corners.
SU keeper Sarah Clare made 11 saves in the losing effort.
Shenandoah continues the road trip on Sunday with a non-league contest at Christopher Newport.
