SU roundup: Marlins sink Hornets in three sets

WINCHESTER -- Visiting Virginia Wesleyan opened up its Old Dominion Athletic Conference volleyball slate with a 3-0 sweep over Shenandoah on Friday evening at Shingleton Gymnasium.
The Marlins (7-3, 1-0 ODAC) dispatched SU (5-4, 0-2) with wins at 18, 15 and 22.
Shenandoah had its most solid performance in the third set, leading by six points on two different occasions only to see Virginia Wesleyan erase a 16-10 deficit with a 6-0 run.
From this point on, the two teams were within four points of one another the rest of the way.
Virginia Wesleyan eventually closed out the contest on two consecutive Hornets attack errors.
Haley Smith and Rachel Gross paced SU with six kills each with Samantha Schambach adding five.
Kelsey Caviston had a match-high 10 for the Marlins.
Gross and Blake Parkes posted 12 digs each for the hosts.
Shenandoah is back in action Saturday with a tri-match against Randolph-Macon and Catholic. Play begins at 11 a.m.
