Generals capture 2A regional title

There was plenty of drama at the Region 2A East golf tournament held at Kiskiack in Williamsburg on Monday. When it was all said and done it was Stonewall Jackson standing on top.
The Generals won the regional title with a 159 in a rain-shortened tournament. The Generals advance to the Class 2A state tournament held next week at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in Front Royal.
"The kids are excited," Stonewall Jackson coach Roger Wilkins said in a phone interview. "It was a great, great day. I'm just really proud of them."
There were two different lightning delays back-to-back, with several groups still trying to finish up their first nine holes. It was decided that once play resumed that they would only play nine holes.
The Generals had four different golfers still waiting to finish their front nine, and they had a two-shot lead over Buffalo Gap. When play resumed Stonewall Jackson's Colton Harlow made a 25-foot par putt on the ninth hole, according to Wilkins. Then Andrew Good birdied the eighth hole, and ended up with the last shot of the day -- a three-to-four foot put for par according to Wilkins.
"He knocked it in, right down the middle for par," Wilkins said.
That gave the Generals the title by two strokes over Buffalo Gap, who finished with a 161.
Strasburg finished fourth as a team with a 168. Tyler Doman and Jacob Smith led the Rams, as each shot a 41.
"I said all along that our depth as a team would help us out and it did," Wilkins said. "This was just really special. I'm elated for them. I'm proud of them. All year long, they've worked really hard and really put the time in."
