ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The James Madison women’s tennis squad went undefeated on the final day of the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational, winning both doubles flight titles and sweeping the open positions in three of four singles flight title matches.
In Flight ‘A’ doubles, junior Taylor Pinchoff and freshman Alex Huie battled to an 8-6 victory over George Washington’s Lana Robins and Grace Egger to earn the flight title. In Flight ‘B’ doubles, senior Jacqueline Palmucci and freshman Rachel Nelson won the flight title with an 8-3 victory over George Washington’s Isabella Escobar and Allison Hansen.
JMU earned both spots in the final rounds of three singles flights on Sunday. Because two Dukes were entered in the same championship matches, the finals were not played.
Flight ‘D’ singles saw both semifinal matches end in two-set shutouts. Sophomore Cara Wirth won 6-0, 6-0 over Navy’s Maggie McLaughlin, and redshirt junior Sarah Khan won 6-0, 6-0 over Longwood’s Mason Thomas.
Palmucci notched a three-set win (6-3, 4-6, 10-5) over Mary Washington’s Shelby Harris in the Flight ‘B’ singles semifinal round to advance to the championship match. Freshman Emily Bradshaw also earned a berth in the championship match after she rolled to a two-set win (6-2, 6-3) over Navy’s Katie Porter in Flight ‘B’ singles semifinal action.
In Flight ‘C’ singles, senior Ruxandra Andriescu tallied a come-from-behind win (1-6, 6-4, 10-7) over UMBC’s Madlena Kurasz to advance to the final round. Nelson posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Longwood’s Anna Pelak to move on to the same final match.
The Dukes will wrap up the fall tournament season next weekend at the ITA Atlantic Regionals. Play begins on Friday, Oct. 18, in Charlottesville.
