JMU roundup: Dukes win Agee Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG -- The James Madison University men's golf team placed four in the top seven individual spots and won the team title at the 2013 Joe Agee Invitational on Tuesday.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by William & Mary, was played at the Williamsburg Country Club (Par 71 - 6,822 yards) in Williamsburg.
After leading by two shots after the second round, James Madison battled through the final round to post a 1-under 283 in the final round for a 54-hole total of 1-under 851, one shot better than runner-up and CAA foe Towson at even-par 852. Host William & Mary was third at 10-over 862, with Saint Joseph's at 30-over 882 and Fairleigh Dickinson at 32-over 884 rounding out the top five teams in the field.
Junior Jon Weiss posted his second straight 1-under 70 to finish at 2-under 211 in fourth place to lead the Dukes. Freshman Ryan Cole and junior Trey Smith were two shots back of Weiss in a tie for fifth at even-par 213. Cole shot a 1-under 70 as well, while Smith had the best round of the day for JMU with a 2-under 69. Freshman Poom Pattaropong also finished in the top 10, tying for seventh at 1-over 214 with a final 18 score of 3-over 74, while senior Tucker Koch tied for 32nd at 12-over 225, closing with a 3-over 74. Playing as an individual, sophomore Chris Kapsak tied for 23rd at 8-over 221 after a final round 4-over 75.
William & Mary's Alex Hicks ran away with the individual title with a final round 4-under 67 to put him at 14-under 199, seven shots better than runner-up Sam Stewart of Towson at 7-under 206.
JMU will return to the course Oct. 14-15 for the Donald Ross Intercollegiate at Mimosa Hills Country Club in Morganton, N.C.
