JMU roundup: Simmons, Williams earn football honors

Daily Staff Reports - sports@nvdaily.com

James Madison's Dejor Simmons and Kwe'shon Williams each earned a Colonial Athletic Conference Player of the Week, for their performance in Saturday's 38-31 win over Richmond. Simmons was name the CAA Special Teams Player of the Week, while Williams was the CAA Rookie of the Week.

Simmons finished with a career-high 141 yards on three kickoff returns. The junior highlighted his stellar play on the second half's opening kickoff, which he returned a conference- and school-record tying 100 yards for his first collegiate score. The 100-yard return was just the second such return in program history and the team's first kickoff return for a touchdown since 2008.

Williams showed no signs of an injury that prevented him from playing the previous week, turning in a career day in JMU's win over the Spiders. The rookie finished with career highs with nine tackles, including four solo, and three pass breakups. Williams also came away with his second-career interception, which he returned 35 yards and that led to touchdown that gave the Dukes a 28-9 third-quarter advantage.
