WINCHESTER -- The Shenandoah University field hockey team scored a pair of quick goals Thursday night on its way to a 4-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over visiting Washington and Lee.
Junior Ashley Cross, who finished with three goals, scored those two initial tallies for SU (7-9, 3-2 ODAC) to key the win over the Generals (2-12, 1-4).
After Cross scored unassisted just 2:51 into the game, W&L quickly answered on a Charlotte MacDonald goal at 4:15.
Four minutes later, Cross took a pass from sophomore Presha Merritt and ripped home the goal that put the Hornets on top to stay.
Shenandoah put the game away with two goals in the final four minutes of the first half.
At 30:10, Cross corralled a long pass just above goal line extended, cut to the middle to beat a defender and tapped home a shot from right on top of W&L keeper Sally Curtiss to complete her natural hat trick.
Finally, with one minute remaining, sophomore Alana Meadows took a pass off a penalty corner insertion and lifted a feed right into front of Curtiss on the Generals' doorstep. Freshman Alexa Lapp redirected this feed past Curtiss for the Hornets final goal of the half.
Washington & Lee made matters interesting late in the second half with goals from Lindsey Purpura and Maggie Waxter at 63:25 and 65:24, respectively, but were unable to bring the game back to level.
W&L had a 13-12 advantage in shots while SU took nine of the game's 15 penalty corners.
Senior Sarah Clare had seven saves in 60:21 of action before turning it over to Katelyn Gregory.
The Hornets are back in action on Wednesday night at Eastern Mennonite in a 7 p.m. contest.
