HARRISONBURG – After setting a career-high in blocks twice last weekend, James Madison volleyball junior middle blocker Lizzy Briones was named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. This is the second consecutive week a JMU player has won the award after redshirt junior setter Kristi Richardson claimed the honor a week ago.
Briones helped lead JMU to a 2-0 week during its road trip to the northeast last week. In both matches, she knocked down a career-high 11 blocks in wins over Northeastern and Hofstra as the Dukes held their opponents to a .058 attack percentage for the weekend. She averaged 2.75 rejections per set with three solo blocks and 19 block assists. The effort gives the Siloam Springs, Ark., native 151 blocks on the season, tying her for the second-most blocks in a season by a JMU player. She only trails Kate Fuchs mark of 162 from 2002.
Briones also added 17 kills on .263 hitting, five digs and two assists on the weekend. In Madison’s 3-2 win over Northeastern, she had a double-double with 11 kills and 11 blocks.
The College of Charleston’s Darcy Dorton earned CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors and Hofstra’s Hannah Klemm was tabbed as the Rookie of the Week.
Fourth-seeded JMU plays in the CAA Championship this weekend in Charleston, S.C., kicking things off against fifth-seeded Hofstra at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22. The winner of that match advances to the quarterfinals against top-seeded College of Charleston at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
