Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

NEWARK, Del. -- Senior Amy Goldstein was chosen by women's field hockey league coaches as the Colonial Athletic Association's Defensive Player of the Year for 2013, announced Thursday night at the CAA championship banquet.

This season, Goldstein helped lead a stout defense that tallied five shutouts and allowed just 1.67 goals per game en route to a 10-8 record. On the offensive end, she posted a team-high tying six assists as well as five goals, third most on the team. Over her four-year career, she started 63 of her 74 appearances for the purple and gold and posted nine goals, six assists and 24 points, including three game-winning scores.

Goldstein also garnered All-CAA First Team honors alongside redshirt sophomore Taylor West. Sophomore Loes Stijntjes earned All-CAA Second Team honors, and freshman Rosalie Becker took home CAA All-Rookie accolades. Rounding out the conference awards for JMU was junior Bethany Ashworth, who picked up CAA All-Academic team honors.

West led the Dukes with 14 goals and 33 points this season, the most by a single JMU player since 2010 (Amy Daniel - 19 goals, 47 points). She earned two CAA Player of the Week awards, both after tallying five goals over two games. She averaged a conference-leading 1.29 goals per game.

Stijntjes finished the 2013 season with two goals and five assists for nine points after starting all 18 games for the Dukes. Becker started 16 of 18 games during her first JMU season and scored two goals on eight shots, including one game-winner, with one assist. Ashworth, a 2012 NFHCA National Academic Squad honoree and 2012 NFHCA Division I Scholar of Distinction, totaled a career-high four goals and one assist in 2013.

Delaware's Esmée Peet garnered both CAA Player of the Year and CAA Rookie of the Year accolades for 2013. Her coach, Rolf van de Kerkhof, and William & Mary's Tess Ellis were named 2013 CAA Co-Coaches of the Year.

Overall, the Dukes finished the 2013 season with a 10-8 record and averaged 2.89 goals per game. They averaged 16.2 shots per outing and led the league with 6.61 penalty corners per game.
