Chuck Ashby has resigned as Sherando High School’s varsity volleyball coach and former Warriors coach James Minney has been named to replace him.

In a news release issued by Frederick County Public Schools on Tuesday, Ashby stated he decided to resign after six seasons as head coach order to spend more time with his family and young children.

Minney coached Sherando’s volleyball team prior to Ashby assuming the position and most recently coached Sherando’s junior varsity volleyball team. He also served as the assistant coach for the varsity volleyball team.

During Ashby’s tenure, Sherando’s volleyball team accumulated a record of 92-44 and won Northwestern District titles in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Ashby was named the Northwestern District Coach of the Year from 2009-2012.

Minney is returning to the position he held from 2002-2007. During his tenure as varsity volleyball coach at Sherando, the Warriors compiled a record of 104-43. Minney’s teams won one Northwestern District regular season championship and three Northwestern District Tournament Championships. They also earned four regional playoff berths. In 2005, Minney was named the Northwestern District and Regional Coach of the Year after his team finished as the runner-up in the Virginia High School League state championship.

“I’m looking forward to returning to my role as the varsity volleyball coach at Sherando,” Minney stated in the news release. “Since I’ve been serving as an assistant coach with the varsity team the past several years as well as the head coach of the JV team, I’ve developed a good rapport with our players which should help us as we work to build upon the program’s past success.

“We have an outstanding group of young ladies involved with our JV and varsity teams and I’m looking forward to working with them individually and collectively in order to compete at the district, conference and state levels.”
