Prep roundup: Falcons hold off Hawks in girls basketball

FRONT ROYAL — Central built an early lead and then held off a Skyline rally for a 46-40 non-district girls basketball victory on Monday night.

The Falcons raced out to a 15-2 lead with all 15 points coming from Katelyn Poston and Sydney Plum. The Hawks used a 10-2 run in the second period to get back in the game and cut the lead to 21-16.

Central was able to extend the lead back to as many as 13 in the third period, but the Hawks made another run, and eventually made it a one-possession game in the fourth period.

“We played in spurts,” Central coach Mallory Skarupa-Minster said. “I don’t know why we backed off, but we backed off. [Quinn] Breeden came alive for them a little bit more in the second half. Our heads weren’t in it at times, people making silly mistakes.”

Skyline used a 6-0 run, aided by a 3-pointer and a jumper from Breeden, to cut the lead to 42-39 with 1:24 left. Poston hit four free throws down the stretch, and the Hawks missed their last three shots to seal the Central win.

Poston had 20 points and four steals and Plum had 17 points and five steals to lead the Falcons (5-1). Tamra Scott had five points and 10 rebounds for Central.

Skyline was led by 14 points from Breeden and 13 from Clifton.

Despite the win, Skarupa-Minster said the team still has a lot of work to do.

“We’re still not playing together as a team the way we need to be,” she said.
