ASHBURN — Sherando switched to a zone defense and it helped pave the way to a tourney title for the Warriors on Saturday in the Broad Run girls basketball tournament. Sherando rallied to beat Yorktown, 29-28, in a defensive battle in the tourney final.

The Warriors trailed 14-8 early in the second period, when Sherando coach Mike Marsh decided to switch from a man-to-man defense to a zone, and they held the Patriots to only 14 points the rest of the way.

Sherando’s Heidi Brown, was named tournament MVP, and led the Warriors with seven points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. Davina Lane had a game-high nine points, five rebounds and seven steals for the Warriors (6-3). Audra Sites had four points and 12 rebounds.

“It was a very physical game,” Marsh said. “Both teams had played two physical games two straight nights. They play an aggressive defense just like we do. Both teams missed a lot of shots and I think that was because of fatigue and it was such good defense.”

The Warriors took their first lead of the game with around two minutes left, and Sites hit the game-winning free throw with around a minute left in the game.

“This was good for us,” Marsh said. “We had to win three quality games. This will be a good building block for the rest of the season.”
