Prep roundup: Sluggish start dooms Rams

Daily Staff Report -- sports@nvdaily.com

MADISON -- A slow start doomed Strasburg in a 45-42 Bull Run District loss to host Madison County on Monday night.

The Rams found themselves trailing 14-4 after the first period and 25-14 at halftime. Despite the early hole, Strasburg (3-3, 3-2 Bull Run) used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to cut Madison County's lead to 29-26 to get back in it. The Rams had a chance to tie in the final seconds after Madison County missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity at the free-throw line, but Tyler Doman's 3-point attempt at the buzzer fell just short.

Strasburg shot just 22.4 percent (13 for 58) from the field, including just a 6-for-31 (19.4 percent) mark from inside the 3-point arc. The Rams held a 44-32 rebounding edge but couldn't hit shots in close, said Strasburg head coach Matt Hiserman.

"We weren't there the whole first quarter, that was part of our problem," Hiserman said. "When you to 4-for-26 from the field in a half, you're not going to beat many people.

"We had a chance to separate ourselves from the middle of the pack [in the district]. Now we're falling right back into the middle, I feel like."

Senior Matt Clutter led the Rams with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while senior Jonathan Kloosterman finished with 10 points and 10 boards.

Senior Bobby Ford led the Mountaineers with 15 points.
