SU roundup: Four Hornets named to all-state team

FERRUM — Shenandoah University had four football players earn all-state honors in selections announced Tuesday morning by the Virginia State Sports Information Directors.
All four honorees come to the second team All-State, two on the offensive side of the ball and two on defense.
Sophomore Andrew Smith and freshman Miles Green are named at running back and tight end, respectively, with Jake Payne picked as a defensive lineman and Byron Mitchell as a linebacker.
Payne is a sophomore and Mitchell a senior.
Smith was a first team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honoree as an all-purpose back after posting 890 yards rushing, 269 receiving and 448 in kick returns.
He earned ODAC Player of the Week honors on two occasions.
Green had 24 receptions for 333 yards and two touchdowns this season and posted at least one catch in nine of 10 games.
He had a season-high five receptions for 51 yards in the Emory and Henry game on November 9.
Payne, a second team All-ODAC honoree, was third on the team with 62 tackles including 26 solo and 5.5 for loss.
Mitchell, who earned first team All-ODAC honors, finished his career as the all-time tackles leader at Shenandoah with 276.
He had double-digit tackles in four of 10 games, including 17 in his SU finale.
Mitchell was named ODAC Player of the Week twice, the BSN National Player of the Week once and played in the D3Senior Classic All-Star game.
Two former area standouts also earned first-team honors. Hampden-Sydney’s Scot Markland, a Sherando graduate, was a first-team selection as a defensive lineman. Bridgewater’s Chandler DeHaven, a James Wood graduate, garnered first-team honors as a place-kicker.
