DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Shenandoah University opened up the 2013 Daytona Shootout with a 60-52 men’s basketball victory over Berry (Ga.) Thursday evening.

Shenandoah (5-3) took control of the contest with a 9-0 run from the 15:44 to 12:27 marks of the first that turned an 8-5 deficit into a 14-8 lead.

Hunter Smoak book-ended the run for the Vikings with a layup and three consecutive free throws, respectively, but Berry missed 11 shots and turned the ball over six times during a span of 7:09 without a point.

Senior Avery Green, who finished with 18 points and his now just 88 from 1,000 for his career, had five of the Hornets’ nine points during this pivotal run.

SU held the remainder of the contest after taking this lead, but Berry had a 6-1 run in just 31 seconds to just the deficit to just five, 54-49, with 1:42 remaining.

Sophomore Xavier Alston gave the Hornets some breathing room with a pair of free throws before junior Jared Carithers finally broke the Vikings’ back with a fast-break layup at the 47-second mark.

Berry had cut it to five points on one previous occasion, but a Carithers 3-pointer from NBA range kept Shenandoah firmly in control.

SU, which was outrebounded 48-40, shot 36 percent for the game.

Berry shot just 29 percent and committed 23 turnovers that turned into 15 Hornets points.

Carithers backed up Green with 17 points, with CJ Rudisill and Jaylen Street pulling down seven rebounds each.

The squad completes the tournament on Saturday with a 6 p.m. game against Millsaps (Miss.).
