Prep roundup: Cooper leads Falcons to boys basketball win

WASHINGTON, Va. — Central High School’s Travis Cooper tallied a team-high 25 points to lead the Falcons to a 78-50 boys basketball road win against Bull Run District rival Rappahannock County on Friday night.
Central (5-5, 3-3 Bull Run) had four players score in double digits in the win. Joining Cooper were Zach Herbaugh (12 points), Ricky Neff (11) and Austin Fadely (10). Nine different players scored for the Falcons.
Bradlee Frye poured in a game-high 26 points for Rappahannock County (1-10, 0-7 Bull Run). Jackson Strickler added 10 points for the Panthers.
Strasburg 54, Moorefield 45
STRASBURG — Host Strasburg sank 9 of 10 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to discourage a Moorefield (W.Va.) rally for a 54-45 win on Friday night.
Tyler Doman had 18 points and 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double for the Rams. Jonathan Kloosterman also had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for Strasburg (7-5). The Rams outrebounded the Yellow Jackets, 40-20, and finished with a 20-7 advantage in free-throw attempts.
Tyler Smith had 13 points to lead Moorefield. Aaron Cole and Gregory Franklin added 10 points apiece for the Yellow Jackets.
Massanutten Academy 49, Quantico 34
WOODSTOCK — Damoni Gunter tallied 18 points to lead host Massanutten Academy to a 49-34 boys basketball victory over Quantico on Friday.
Joshua Holt added 13 points for the Colonels.
Central 61, Rappahannock County 33
WASHINGTON, Va. — Sydney Plum’s 18-point effort paced visiting Central to a 61-33 win over Rappahannock County in Bull Run District girls basketball action Friday.
Rebecca Truban tallied 10 of the Falcons’ 34 steals in the game.
Meredith Phillips added 11 points, Brooklyn Pumphrey had eight points and Tamra Scott finished with a team-high seven rebounds for Central (9-3, 7-2 Bull Run).
Kayla Robey scored 18 points for Rappahannock County (2-8, 0-8 Bull Run).
Riverheads 36, Stonewall Jackson 30
STAUNTON — Host Riverheads jumped out to a first-quarter lead and never relinquished it in a 36-30 win over Stonewall Jackson in a Shenandoah District girls basketball matchup on Friday.
Christa Arehart paced the Gladiators with 12 points. Emma Casto added 10 points for Riverheads (6-6, 2-3 Shenandoah).
Makaela Turner had nine points to lead Stonewall Jackson (0-10, 0-5 Shenandoah). Cheyenne Crigger chipped in eight points for the Generals.
Massanutten Academy 46, Quantico 37
WOODSTOCK — Selah Applin poured in 22 points to lead Massanutten Academy to a 46-37 victory over Quantico in girls basketball action on Friday.
Mara Dorsey chipped in 13 points and Chelsea Reid added nine points for the Colonels.
Postgraduate boys basketball
Massanutten Academy 81, Rise Academy 72
WOODSTOCK — Host Massanutten Academy topped Rise Academy 81-72 in Friday’s opening night of the Massanutten Showcase postgraduate boys basketball tournament.
Dimitri Sousa tallied 16 points to lead the Colonels. University of Hawaii-bound guard Isaac Fleming chipped in 14 points, and Rutgers signee Dwayne Foreman had 12 points for Massanutten.
In Friday’s other Showcase game, Shooting 4 Greatness beat Ridgeview Prep, 85-75.
