Prep roundup: Rams fall short in road loss to Green Dragons

Daily Staff Report -- sports@nvdaily.com

STANARDSVILLE -- Visiting Strasburg failed to complete its comeback bid on Monday night, as the Rams fell to William Monroe, 49-42, in Bull Run District boys basketball action.

The Rams (11-7, 7-5 Bull Run) trailed 34-27 entering the fourth period and managed to cut William Monroe's lead to 46-42 late in the game. However, Strasburg missed an opportunity to cut the Dragons' lead to two when the Rams had a layup blocked off of the backboard. William Monroe hit a free throw to extend its lead to five, and Strasburg missed another layup, allowing a pair of Dragons free throws to seal the win.

"We had some chances down the stretch ... but we came up short at the end," Rams coach Matt Hiserman said. "We played pretty well, we just had to finish around the basket."

Senior forward Jonathan Kloosterman led Strasburg with 12 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Tyler Doman had eight points, and junior Ryan Smoot had four points and eight rebounds for the Rams.

Senior Austin Batten led William Monroe (10-5, 9-1) with 14 points, while junior Jeffrey Early finished with 12 points for the Dragons. William Monroe was just 17 for 42 from the free-throw line.

Kloosterman needs just 16 points to reach 1,000 for his career. Strasburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against Manassas Park.
