SU roundup: Baseball Hornets receive top 25 votes

MINNEAPOLIS –The Shenandoah University baseball team is among a host of schools receiving top 25 ranking consideration in pre-season poll results released Thursday by D3baseball.com.

Shenandoah, which cracked the 25-win barrier last season for the fifth consecutive season and seventh time in the past eight years, received 33 points in the pre-season poll.

SU comes in eight points behind former USA South rival Christopher Newport and four points clear of former Appleton opponent Illinois Wesleyan.

Linfield (Ore.) is the top team in the poll.

ODAC rival Bridgewater is No. 24.

Shenandoah opens its season Feb. 15 against No. 23 Misericordia.

Men’s basketball

MINNEAPOLIS — Shenandoah junior Jared Carithers has been named to the week seven D3hoops.com Team of the Week in selections announced Thursday morning by the website.

Carithers, the Hornets’ point guard, averaged 28 points and 4.5 rebounds as SU downed PSU-Altoona and Roanoke last week.

After putting up 24 points in the 94-82 non-conference win at PSU-Altoona, Carithers had a game-high 32 points in the 82-67 ODAC win at Roanoke Saturday afternoon.

He shot 53 percent from the floor and knocked down 10 of his 20 3-point attempts.

Carithers is the second Shenandoah player to earn ToW honors this season. Senior Avery Green was picked in week one.

The Hornets are back in action Saturday at Hampden-Sydney.
