SU roundup: Hornets open strong in track and field

NEWPORT NEWS – The Shenandoah University men’s and women’s track and field teams had a strong opening day Friday at the Captains Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University.

The men’s 4 x 200 relay team of Kirk Lewis, Bobby Lewis, David Johnson and Henry Howell was fifth wigth a 1:35.71 with the ‘B’ team of Charles Basil, Jonathan Gery, Donald Shubrooks and Everton Eastwood coming in at 1:38.47.

The 4 x 800 squad of Ryan Taylor, Matthew Gussiaas, Denzel White and Kyle Lombardi finished second at 8:58.61.

In the throws, senior Evan Griffin was fourth with a toss of 15.69 meters.

On the women’s side, junior Jaclyn Mohlmann continued her strong season by posting a season-best 3001 points in the pentathlon competition.

Mohlmann opened with a 9.90 seconds in the 60 meter high hurdles to earn 731 points and followed that up with a 1.55 meter high jump for an additional 678.

After tossing the shot 8.87 meters and posting a 4.56 meter long jump, Mohlmann won the 800 meters with a 2:29.99.

She earned 693 points in that last event and did so after being spiked on false start to the race.

Mohlmann finished second among DIII competitors in the event and fifth overall.
