SU roundup: Green scores 40 in Hornets' loss

Daily Staff Reports - sports@nvdaily.com

WINCHESTER - Senior Avery Green had a historic night for the Shenandoah University men's basketball team, but it was not enough as visiting Eastern Mennonite escaped with a 78-72 ODAC victory Wednesday evening.

Green, the league's leading scorer, had 40 points for the Hornets (11-7, 2-6 ODAC) in the loss.

Marcel Crump was nearly as dominant for EMU (10-8, 5-4), scoring 35 points to help his team to the victory.

Green was 15 of 23 from the line (three 3-pointers) and 7 of 9 from the line in posting the fifth-best total in SU men's basketball program history.

The 40 points scored is the most for the program since former national Player of the Year Phil Dixon '96 had 42 points versus Averett on January 28, 1995.

Crump had 12 field goals (one 3-pointer) and was 10 of 19 from the charity stripe in his solid evening.

The two men were two of just three in the contest to post double-digit scoring - RJ Sims backed up Crump with 21 points for the victors.

The contest was a back and forth affair with the two teams trading the lead 11 times and being tied on six others before Eastern Mennonite finally took the lead for good on a Crump layup with 15:29 to play.

The Royals extended their advantage out to seven points by the 11:17 mark before Shenandoah stormed back in it with a 7-0 run to tie it on a Green fastbreak layup with 10:09 remaining.

Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium capacity crowd, this would be the Hornets high-water mark.

EMU seized total control with a 9-1 run from the 6:28 to 4:41 marks and SU would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Eastern Mennonite shot 53 percent for the game and owned a 41-34 advantage on the glass. Despite that seven-rebound deficit, Shenandoah scored 16 of the game's 27 second-chance points.

The two teams combined for 84 points in the paint and 34 fastbreak points.

The men continue this homestand on Saturday with a 4:00 ODAC contest against Randolph. It is also Alumni Day and a Red Out for the squad.
