Dingman, Williams pace Warriors to top-10 state swimming finishes

CHRISTIANSBURG — Sherando High School senior Kelsey Dingman’s two fourth-place finishes helped the Warriors to a ninth-place finish at Saturday’s Class 4A state swimming and diving championship meet.

Dingman clocked a final time of 25.09 seconds to take fourth in the 50-yard freestyle after turning in a time of 24.67 in the preliminaries earlier in the day. She finished with a time of 55.87 in the 100 free finals to finish fourth after qualifying for the championship heat with a time of 54.97 in the preliminaries.

In the boys meet, Sherando’s James Williams notched a fifth-place finish in the 200 free (1:50.71) and added a ninth-place finish in the 100 free (50.05) to lead the Warriors to an eighth-place finish.

Other individual finishers for Sherando were Mark Restrepo in the boys 200 free (11th, 1:53.51) and Laura Ferguson in the girls 50 free (11th, 25.95).

Brenna Sharp, Brianna English, Dingman and Ferguson combined to finish seventh in the girls 200 medley relay (1:59.16) and tied for fifth with Woodgrove in the 200 free relay (1:46.07).

Williams, Tommy McVey, Ethan Medrano and Restrepo combined to finish sixth in the 200 free relay (1:35.11). Restrepo, Daniel Milburn, Medrano and Williams took eighth in the 400 free relay (3:29.04).

Class 2A meet

CHRISTIANSBURG — Strasburg’s Josh Stickles scored a pair of fifth-place finishes in Friday night’s Class 2A state swimming and diving meet.

Stickles clocked a final time of 2:14.90 to take fifth in the 200 individual medley, and tallied a 58.20 to finish fifth in the 100 butterfly.

Strasburg’s Ian Priest added a 14th-place effort in the 200 free (2:18.56).

Class 3A meet

CHRISTIANBURG — Central’s Trevor Wolf scored a ninth-place finish in the 50 free to pace the Falcons at Friday’s Class 3A state swimming and diving meet.

Wolf finished with a time of 22.93.

Teammate Jonathan Feaster added a 12th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.06).
