Prep roundup: Defense sparks Sherando to win

WINCHESTER — Sherando struggled on offense, especially in the first half, but the Warriors’ defense came through all four periods.
The Warriors created 31 Handley turnovers en route to a 60-32 Northwestern District girls basketball victory over the Judges on Friday night.
“Defensively we were great,” Sherando coach Mike Marsh said. “No matter what, we have preached and preached defense all year. And we know that defense will help us in tight games. No matter what, we know we always bring that calling card. That’s good for us. We need our offense, especially our transition offense to be solid and tonight that was our weak part.”
The Warriors led 20-13 at the half, but pulled away by out-scoring Handley 17-7 in the third period.
Jess Hakel led the Warriors with 14 points, while Audra Sites and Davina Lane each added 10. Handley was led by Alysandra Worrell had 13 for Handley.
Luray 66, Stonewall Jackson 26
LURAY — Host Luray knocked down 10 3-pointers in Friday’s 66-26 victory over Shenandoah District rival Stonewall Jackson.
Makaela Turner had nine points to lead Stonewall Jackson (0-20, 0-12 Shenandoah).
Katelyn Keyser had 13 points, Michaela Nichols added 12 points and Sable Ponn chipped in 11 points for the Bulldogs.
Quantico 56, Massanutten Academy 42
QUANTICO — Massanuttten Academy fell short on the road at Quantico on Friday, falling 56-42 to the host Warriors.
Mara Dorsey led the Colonels with 15 points. Chelsea Reid added 12 points and Selah Applin had 11 for Massanutten Academy.
Massanutten Academy 59, Quantico 52
QUANTICO — Joshua Holt and Zach Siegel combined for 34 points to lead visiting Massanutten Academy to a 59-52 win over Quantico on Friday.
Holt had 18 points and Siegel finished with 16 points for the Colonels. Thomas Lloyd added eight points for Massanutten.
