Prep roundup: Sherando wrestling wins regional title
Daily Staff Report -- email@example.com
CULPEPER -- Sherando's wrestling team took first place in the 4A North regional tournament on Monday, giving the Warriors their first regional title since 2002.
The Warriors finished the two-day tournament with a total of 194.5 points, well ahead of second-place Fauquier (161) and third-place Eastern View (144.5), which hosted the event.
Sherando sent three wrestlers into the championship round and came away with one individual champion, as senior P.K. Jessen won the 170-pound title. Warriors freshman John Borst (152 pounds) and senior Tyler Hamilton (220) each finished in second place for Sherando.
The Warriors qualified a total of seven wrestlers for this weekend's 4A state tournament in Salem.
"We thought as a team we wrestled extremely well," Warriors coach Pepper Martin said. "We picked up a lot of bonus points. While teams who were trying to catch us were getting decisions, we were getting two bonus points with pins.
"What really helped us is we showed our depth and a lot of guys scored points for us. We took 13 wrestlers and I think 12 of those 13 scored points for us. That's how you compete for a championship."
Sherando got third-place finishes from Mike Duffy (106), Jacob Guthridge (132), Killian McPartland (182) and Ben Avery (285), qualifying each of them for the state tournament.
"Even though we had a couple of disappointments ... we also had some surprises," Martin said. "Killian McPartland was a big surprise for us at 182. I think he ended up 4-1 with four pins. And Ben Avery at 285 had a really good tournament."
