Quick start puts Warriors in semifinals

STEPHENS CITY — Sherando wanted to make quick work of Woodgrove on Tuesday night in the Conference 21 quarterfinals — mission accomplished.

The Warriors almost held the Wolverines scoreless in the first period en route to a 73-39 thumping in boys basketball action.

“We started out strong,” Sherando senior Jeremiah Curtis said. “We wanted to take advantage of our size down low.”

The Warriors scored the first 17 points of the game, including seven from Azjier Outler and six from Curtis.

The Wolverines came out in a box-and-one against Sherando 6-foot-7 forward Grant Golden, but had no answer for the 6-foot-8 Curtis.

Offensively, the Wolverines missed their first 12 shots, and didn’t make a basket until 24 seconds were left in the opening period.

Sherando coach Garland Williams said the Wolverines are generally a good 3-point shooting team. They made only two against the Warriors, both of which came in the fourth period.

“I think for the most part our guys did a good job of getting out and contesting their shots,” Williams said.

The Warriors kept the pressure on throughout the game, extending the lead to 37-11 at the half.

Sherando had five players with at least nine points.

“I think it’s very important that everybody contributes,” Williams said. Grant [Golden] can be a guy that gets us 18-19 a ballgame, but we need scoring from everybody else. If Jeremiah [Curtis] can get us 14-15, Isaiah [Williams] can get us 10-12 that’s big. [Azjier Outler] had a good game, that was a big plus for us. We had guys coming off the bench that had good games.”

Ryan Vacca and David Wick each had seven for the Wolverines.

Golden finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Curtis had 14 points and six rebounds for Sherando. Outler had 11 points, while Isaiah Williams and Trey Brisco had nine each.

The Warriors will now play at Dominion on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the conference semifinals with a regional berth on the line.

“This was a good game for us, we just have to try take this one and build on it,” Williams said.
