LEXINGTON – Shenandoah University used a big second half run on its way to a 73-64 ODAC men’s basketball victory at Washington and Lee Wednesday evening.
Shenandoah (12-8, 4-7 ODAC) led virtually the entire first half only to see W&L (7-13, 3-8) take its only second half lead, 37-36, on the strength of a 6-1 run to start the second.
And then senior Avery Green got started.
Green, the leading scorer in the ODAC, keyed an 18-2 run with 10 points as the Hornets turned a 37-36 deficit into a 54-39 lead with 13:06 remaining.
But the Generals weren’t finished.
W&L answered this SU run with a spurt of its own, scoring 16 of the game’s next 19 points (broken up by only a CJ Rudisill 3-pointer) to cut the deficit to two points on a pair occasions.
Coach Rob Pryor’s club kept its composure at both points, getting a Green jumper in the lane followed by three Jared Carithers free throws to push the advantage back to five.
Washington and Lee would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
In the final 62 seconds, the Hornets iced the contest with 3 of 4 from the line along with a Green fast break layup.
Green led all players with 21 points while Carithers added 13 and Dante Seriale 12.
Drew Kimberly had 17 for the hosts.
Shenandoah shot 46 percent for the game and held a slight, 39-37, rebounding advantage.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak for Pryor’s club and the win is just the second-ever for the Hornets on the Generals home floor.
The SU men host Roanoke on Saturday at 2 in another ODAC contest.
