HARRISONBURG - James Madison women's tennis won its third-straight match on Thursday, March 27, with a 6-1 win over Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel at its home opener. JMU advanced its record to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the CAA as Drexel fell to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the CAA.

JMU won the doubles point after sweeping Drexel in all three matches. Junior Taylor Pinchoff and freshman Alex Huie won their match 8-4 against Zeynap Mafa and Marcela Rosales at No. 1 doubles to start the day.

Freshman Rachel Nelson and sophomore Cara Wirth followed shortly after to clinch the doubles point with an 8-7 win against Lea Winkler and Fiorella Coria at No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, senior Ruxandra Andriescu and senior Jacqueline Palmucci defeated Nicole Pivonka and Erin Bowsher 8-7 to complete the sweep against Drexel.

To start singles play, Nelson was defeated by Pivonka in two sets (6-0, 6-4). It was her first loss of the spring season, ending her nine-match win-streak, and the Dukes' only loss of the day. Huie followed up with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Rosales at the No. 2 spot to put JMU in front of Drexel for good.

Palmucci tallied a two-set victory (6-1, 6-4) over Coria at No. 6 singles. Andriescu, at the No. 5 position, notched a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Lea Winkler to secure the win for the Dukes. At No. 1 singles, Pinchoff took down Mafa in a full three-set match (6-3, 5-7, 6-2) to post a fifth point for JMU.

Rounding out the day was freshman Emily Bradshaw, who battled Bowsher for a three-set victory at No. 4 singles. After Bradshaw took the first set 6-4, Bowsher returned for her own 6-4 win in set two and sent the final match of the afternoon into a decisive third set. After back-and-forth play between the two, Bradshaw emerged with the 7-5 set-three win and the sixth JMU point.

Due to potential weather, the Dukes now hit the road for an 11 a.m. match against Georgetown at the Arlington YMCA in Arlington.
