Katelyn Poston set a personal goal for herself at the beginning of basketball season to make all-state. On Sunday, she found out her goal had been achieved -- twice.

The Central High School senior point guard was named to the Virginia High School Coaches Association Class 3A All-State first team, and to the Virginia High School League Class 3A All-State first team for girls basketball.

"At the beginning of the year it was a personal goal. I didn't really tell anybody," Poston said Monday after Central's softball game. "But I'm definitely excited. It was a surprise. It was a good one to get yesterday."

The teams were decided Sunday and officially announced Monday. Poston averaged 19.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 2.6 assists per game this season. She also led the area by shooting 77.1 percent from the foul line.

She led the Falcons to the Class 3A state semifinals.

Poston said it made it even more special knowing that the coaches are the ones who choose the teams.

"It was definitely an honor to know that the coaches were able to see my talent and hard work and kind of push for me for that," Poston said.

Poston finished as Central's all-time leading scorer, finishing with 1,656 points.

The Falcons went on a surge in the postseason, after finishing fourth in the Bull Run District in the regular season. They lost to eventual Class 3A state champion Spotswood in the state semifinals and finished with a 19-10 record.

"There's not a lot of players that can drive the way she does, and hit the 3-[pointer] and have the consistency from the foul line and kind of hit on all cylinders from the offensive end," Central coach Mallory Skarupa said of Poston in a recent interview. "When you think of Central basketball, that name -- Katelyn Poston -- has been there for the last four years. She will be sorely missed next season."

Poston said it made the all-state honor even more special to get it as a senior.

"I'm so thankful and grateful to be able to be named to such an elite group," Poston said. "Earning that honor in my senior year is a huge accomplishment, and definitely a testament to all of the hard work that I've put in over the past four years.

"It's a great feeling to know that it finally paid off."
